 2017 Preview

Zion Chapel finished the 2016 season with a disappointing 3-7 record. Last year Zion Chapel just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 2A region three with a 2-4 region record.

The Rebels have not qualified for the playoffs since the 2011 season and would love to end that streak this year. The Rebels last playoff victory came during the 1979 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win.

Zion Chapel was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Rebels want to be competitive. They only averaged 15.8 points a game.

Zion Chapel struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 35.3 points a game.

Since 2010, the Zion Chapel football program has struggled with a record of 20-51.

Over the past 25 seasons, Zion Chapel has not won much with a record of 72-186. Their 28.0% winning percentage ranks 54th in Class 2A and 359th in the AHSAA. The Rebels have struggled on the football field with only four winning seasons during this time.

After just a single season as the head football coach at Zion Chapel, Bubba Nall leaves the program. His only team finished with a 3-7 record last year.

Randy Bryant takes over the helm at Zion Chapel entering the 2017 football season.

The Zion Chapel Rebels will play in Class 2A region three during the 2017 season.

It will be an uphill battle for the Rebels if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region three this season.

The Rebels open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent Houston County on Friday, September 1 at L.F. Tillery Field. Last year the Houston County Lions finished with an overall record of 6-5 and in fourth place in Class 1A region two. The Lions lost in the first round of the Class 1A playoffs to Linden by a score of 77-7.

Zion Chapel and Houston County have met a total of 8 times on the football field. The Rebels have a 0-8-0 record against the Lions. They last met in 2016 with Houston County winning by a score of 49-7.

Zion Chapel returns 2A All-State Senior punter Dawson Hamlin. He was named to the first team last season.
